Justin Nelson, JP Morgan, and the School-to-Work Gap

For many young people on the autism spectrum, finishing school marks the start of their hardest test. Justin Nelson, a Managing Director at JP Morgan Private Bank, has identified the move from education to employment as the biggest hurdle neurodiverse individuals face.

Nelson heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team in Connecticut, a group overseeing more than $15 billion in assets. He has combined that professional view with volunteer work aimed at closing the gap between school and a first job.

Support Before and After Graduation

On the education side, Nelson works with Adelphi University’s Bridges Program. The program gives high-functioning students on the spectrum a network of support while they study.

On the employment side, he is involved with Broad Futures, a charity that connects neurodiverse candidates with employers. “They work with employers to match up people who are neurodiverse,” Justin Nelson explains, adding that the group helps employers become educated and run a program to select candidates.

Why the Handoff Breaks Down

Trouble often surfaces at the interview. Communication is typically the toughest area for neurodiverse candidates, Nelson says, and interviews lean heavily on it. “Interviews can be hard for them, so an employer has to think differently about the hiring process.”

That matters because these applicants frequently have exactly what finance needs. Justin Nelson JP Morgan describes them as potentially very creative, with computational skills that far exceed the norm. Analytical work and close attention to detail are central to wealth management, which makes the mismatch between ability and hiring outcome all the more costly.

Once someone is hired, the JP Morgan leader recommends a structured approach. Managers should assign defined tasks and make sure employees see how each piece fits into a larger plan or set of rules. Under those conditions, he says, neurodiverse employees can rank among a team’s best.

His framework for the industry ties these threads together. Firms can redesign interviews, provide structured task management, and partner with organizations like the ones he supports. The required investment is small, and the result can be a smoother path from campus to career for capable people who have too often been left out. Refer to this article for related information.
